8th / 9th PSR Program

Because this year will focus on the change of our Confirmation Program and the number of students that need to be prepared, Teen Faith will not exist!  Instead our 8th grade PSR program will be administered by Sr. Meribeth and our 9th grade PSR program will be handled by Fr. Chris Weber.

Each program will have a separate schedule, in addition to the Confirmation schedule.  Both schedules are included in the "REO Calendar" listed under the navigation bar (gold) at the top of the page as well as below.

2010-11 Teen Faith Program

The fourth, and final block of Teen Faith this year, will focus on Theology of the Body, the revolutionary teaching given to us by Pope John Paul II.

Theology of the Body is not a list of rules.  Rather, it is a map that answers the questions:

-          Who am I?

-          What is my purpose in life?

-          Why did God make me a male or a female?

-          How can I find true happiness here on earth?

-          How can I find love that really satisfies me?

Theology of the Body says that our bodies are holy and good!  Instead of dwelling on the consequences of impurity, Theology of the Body shows the deeply satisfying freedom that comes from having a pure heart.

In this curriculum, teens will discover the beauty and purpose of their sexuality, and why it is such a major part of their ability to love.  They will learn that the Church actually teaches and believes that human sexuality is really important, and good, and beautiful.  It is actually meant, in a sense, to point us to heaven!  The curriculum they will study will help them figure out how to express their sexuality properly without repressing it.

The curriculum is broken down into 12 topics, or subject chapters.  We have chosen 6 of those subjects for our last Teen Faith Block.  They are:

Week 1 – 3/7/2011 – Created for Love.  Many people are searching for the meaning of life and love but don’t realize that the answer is actually right in front of us; the key to finding that love we’re all looking for is hidden in God’s original design of our bodies and souls.  This chapter will explore the idea that God has actually hidden in our design as “male and female” a key to the secret of love.  There will be a class mass as part of this session.

Week 2 – 3/14/2011 – Love Defined: Giving vs. Using.  Deep in our hearts, each of us wants to give and receive love, but most of us don’t know how to do this.  In order for people to love one another properly, they must first desire what is good for the other person.  In this session, you will discover what authentic love looks like and learn the difference between “love” that is self-seeking and real love that is self-donatingConfessions will be made available for all PSR/Teen Faith students during this session.

Week 3 – 3/21/2011 – Naked without Shame.  In the beginning, God created Adam and Eve to be pure and holy.  Their relationship with each other was filled with love, generosity and passion.  There was no fear of being seen as an object to be used.  In this session, you will discuss how to turn back to God and learn to become a gift to one another.

Week 4 – 4/4/2011 – Truth and Freedom.  This session tries to answer two very important questions:  Who are we and how are we called to live.  Knowing and accepting the answers can help us rejoice in the truth and become free.

Week 5 – 4/11/2011 – Language of the Body.  Simple things like a smile, a nod of the head, or a wave of the hand all act as signs that convey a message even if no words are said.  In this chapter, we will examine the language of the body and show that the proper language it should speak is a language of love, which rejoices in always telling the truth.

Week 6 – 4/18/2011 – Dating with Purpose and Purity.  This last session discusses the purpose and boundaries that should exist in your dating life and by enjoying good relationships that are pure you can have a future of happiness and romance without regret.

Mrs. Janet Klimo, longtime Catechist for our PSR program and active member of St. Mary’s Parish, will be the facilitator for this Block.  As with our other sessions, we will begin at 7:00pm and end at 8:15pm.  All sessions will be in the school media center (library).

On January 3, 2011 the 3rd Block for Teen Faith began.  This block will be devoted to the diocese sponsored Called to Protect series.

Called to Protect is a program devoted to making our children aware of what constitutes abuse, how to protect themselves against abuse and what to do if they, or someone they know are in an abusive situation.

Called to Protect is a multi-media program created by Praesidium, a national leader in abuse risk management.  The complete Called to Protect series includes an innovative program for school-aged children based on the latest child development research.  The materials are comprehensive and user-friendly and have already been successfully implemented in several parishes thoughout the diocese.

All St. Mary's PSR students, grades 7 through 9 will be expected to attend these sessions.  Only those students with a parent signed request (Opt-Out form) will be exempt from attending.

We will be starting with a Family session on January 3rd, in which the parents and students are encouraged to attend.  This session will be held in the St. Mary's School Gym starting at 7:00pm.

The 2nd session of the Called to Protect series is scheduled for this Monday, 1/10/2011 at 7:00pm in the Media Center.  This session will discuss “Boundaries” . . . what they are and how to protect them from being violated.  Our 7th grade PSR students, as well as all Teen Faith students are invited to attend.  Mrs. Amy Ducat will facilitate this session.

The 3rd session of the Called to Protect series is scheduled for this Monday, 1/24/2011 at 7:00pm in the Media Center.  This session will discuss “What to do” . . . how to react when your boundaries are violated.  Our 7th grade PSR students, as well as all Teen Faith students are invited to attend.  Mrs. Nora Bricker will facilitate this session.

The 4th session of the Called to Protect series is scheduled for this Monday, 2/6/2011 at 7:00pm in the Media Center.  This session will discuss “Who and How to tell” . . . who can we tell about abuse and how do we tell them.  Mr. Morgan will facilitate this session.  Our 7th grade PSR students, as well as all Teen Faith students are invited to attend.

February 14th is the last session in Teen Faith Block III.  Pam Riczo, Education Coordinator from Our Lady of the Wayside, will attend our last session.  She will be sharing information with our teens about recognizing abuse and abusive relationships and what services are available to help “Make Abuse Stop!”.  Pam has served as a nurse with the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit at Metro Hospital and as a Case Manager with the Berea Children’s Home.

The 2010-11 Teen Faith Program is set up into 4 "Blocks":

- Block 1 starts 9/13/10 and will last 5 weeks.  The topic for this block is "What is Church?".  It will be a discussion about our church, starting with the building (including a tour of St. Mary Church) through the things that make us Catholics (our beliefs, i.e. the Creed).  There will be a class mass for the Teens during this block (9/27/10).

- Block 2 starts 10/25/10 and lasts 5 weeks.  The topic for this block is "Who is Church?"  We will be arranging for guests to come in a give a "witness" to their faith.  Sister has some great ideas for guest speakers who are living our faith everyday.  One session will be spent on the ministries that are active in our own parish.  There will be a Reconciliation Service at the end of this block (12/13/10).

- Block 3 starts 1/3/10 and lasts 6 weeks.  This block will be dedicated to the diocese "Called to Protect" series.  Called to Protect is a multi media series that provides information to parents, children, youth and young adults in matters of protection from abuse and in the creation of safe environments for our children.  This series is designed specifically for Catholic elementary, middle and high-school aged youth based on the latest research of how they learn best.  The entire diocese will be implementing the program this year.

- Block 4 begins 3/7/10 and lasts 6 weeks.  In this block will be presenting "Theology of the Body for Teens".  Using a mix of stories, real-life examples, activities, prayers and references to the culture that teens understand, Theology of the Body for Teens takes the two hottest topics on the planet - God and sex - and marries them through Pope John Paul II's compelling vision for love and life.  This is a new program for St. Mary's and we are very excited to present it to our teens.  There will be a class mass during this block (3/7/10).

The St. Mary's Berea Teen Faith Program is for the all 8th & 9th graders in the Parish.  There are a series of topics,  all dealing with issues that surround the Christian youth of our parish . . . and our society.  The sessions are held on Monday evenings throughout the year depending on Catechist availability.  This program has been established to "bridge the gap" between PSR, where we learn about our faith, and Confirmation, where we accept our faith.
